HiMama Report Finds Parents Becoming More Concerned about Their Children’s Online Presence
In a survey of parents in the United States and Canada, HiMama revealed that nearly 70% of parents were either concerned or very concerned about digital security and privacy for their children. Furthermore, most parents’ outlook on digital security and privacy had worsened in 2014 from the prior year.
Toronto, ON (PRWEB) March 11, 2015 – HiMama released today their inaugural report, Parents in a Digital Age 2015, a survey about parents’ feelings, attitudes and behaviors in relation to how their children’s information is shared online.
In a survey conducted in December 2014 of parents in the United States and Canada, HiMama revealed that nearly 70% of parents were either concerned or very concerned about digital security and privacy for their children. Furthermore, most parents’ outlook on digital security and privacy had worsened in 2014 from the prior year.
The survey also found that while over three quarters of parents were posting photos of their children on social networks, over half of parents were unaware that Facebook, the biggest online social network, owns the digital rights to photos on their site.
Parents also revealed that they would like more information about their child’s activities and learning from schools and child care programs. However, despite parents’ preference for information to be shared securely and privately by these programs, less than one in five parents were receiving information of their children through a private password protected site.
“Our research has shown that parents want as much information as possible about their child’s day. However, parents were clear that they do not want their children’s schools and child care programs posting photos on Facebook, other social networks, public websites and blogs due to legitimate security and privacy concerns,” commented Ron Spreeuwenberg, CEO of HiMama.
HiMama hopes that the report will help stakeholders make more well-informed decisions to ensure security and privacy of children’s information online while also taking advantage of the many wonderful benefits that our digital age has to offer.
