Rhode Island Learning and Development Standards

The Rhode Island Learning and Development Standards were developed to create standardized expectations of development for children from birth to five years of age. The standards allow for measuring the progress towards developmental and learning goals through observations and documentation. The standards have been separated into 9 domains, they are; physical health and motor development, social and emotional development, language development, literacy, cognitive development, mathematics, science, social studies as well as creative arts. To further increase observation and to assist with reaching developmental goals, each domain is accompanied with a skill as well as an indicator.

The Rhode Island Learning and Development Standards are to be used as a framework to compliment a curriculum, and not as a substitute for the curriculum itself, nor are the standards are not to be used as a checklist for development as each child develops in their own unique way.
