Instructions

Step 1:

Gather an assortment of clear, single-serving plastic bottles.

Step 2:

Provide an assortment of art materials, such as glitter, cut straws, beads, sparkle poms, and metallic ribbon, to place inside each bottle.

Step 3:

Assist children in adding items of their choice to the bottles.

Step 4:

Fill the bottles about 3/4 full of water. Attach the cap tightly and seal with heavy tape to avoid leaking.

Step 5:

Invite children to shake their Winter Wonderland Bottles and then set them upright on a tabletop. What happens? What materials do they see floating down through the water?

Step 6:

Place the bottles on a shelf in your setting and invite children to play with them periodically throughout the day.

Keep the fun going.

Consider providing alternative liquids to fill the bottles, such as mineral or cooking oil. Talk about whether the items float or sink in the materials. Does food coloring change the color of the liquid? What happens when two liquids are combined? Supervise closely. Do not allow children to place the liquids in their mouths.

Playful Questions

What happens when we turn the bottle upside down?

What colors do you see?

What items do you see inside the bottle?

What happens if you shake the bottle?

What happens if you set the bottle down?
