Itsy Bitsy Spider

Older Toddlers: Play with the sounds as you say the words. Extend the /s/ sound as you say spiderspout, and sun. See if the children will imitate.

For this developmental activity you will need:

Itsy Bitsy Spider Nursery Rhyme Story Prop (see Resources)

Learning Outcomes

Step 1:

Recite the Itsy Bitsy Spider rhyme.

Step 2:

Assemble your prop ahead of time. Cut the spider strip from the Itsy Bitsy Spider Nursery Rhyme Story Prop (see Resources). Cut the slits where indicated and separate the sun and rain flaps. Lay the rain flap near the top right and tape it along the top edge. Lay the sun flap on top of the rain and tape it again. Flip both flaps to the back of the prop. Thread the spider strip through the slits.

Step 3:

It's likely your toddlers are familiar with this classic rhyme! Begin by saying the rhyme together using familiar hand motions.

Step 4:

Repeat the rhyme using the Nursery Rhyme Story Prop. Begin with the spider at the top. Flip down the rain flap. Pull down the strip to show the spider being washed out. Flip the sun flap and pull the spider up again.

Step 5:

Invite children to name items on the display or retell the rhyme in their own words.
