What educators need to know about emotional intelligence: Part 2 [Webinar]

In this webinar we were joined by Dr. Donna Housman and Emily Stone from The Housman Institute! Dr. Housman and Emily joined us for an interactive webinar all about how heightened emotions in the classroom (such as stress and anxiety) can impact our learning abilities. They walked us through how we can use “heat of the moment” strategies to manage big emotions in the classroom and free up a child’s energy and brain to welcome learning! We learned how emotions are truly at the heart of learning and why fostering emotional intelligence in these years is so critical. This is the second in a 3-part series that you do not want to miss! Keep reading to watch the recording and download the slides!

🧪Key Learning Outcomes from Dr. Housman & Emily!

  • When feelings are not managed or regulated, thinking can be impaired. When we are able to deal with and manage stress and anxiety, we open up the brain for learning.
  • Developing skills such as problem-solving, persistence, attention, focus and listening are all related to strong self-regulation.
  • Strengthening emotional skills in the first 5 years of live, will strengthen cognition.
  • Children build strong emotional skills and awareness through imitation, observation, guidance, modeling and contingent reactions with their caregivers.
  • What is the long-term impact? Positive self-regulation supports problem solving, increases empathy and academic achievement, decreases behavioral challenges and promotes a strong and positive sense of self.
